History of Karlin
Karlin, also known today as Prague 8, has a rich history dating back to ancient times. Although the earliest written reference about the territory and small settlement had already appeared in the 13th century, it only became the first suburb of Prague in 1817 after the approval by the Austro-Hungarian monarch Francis I. The original German name Karolinenthal was chosen in honor of emperor’s wife Karolina Augusta. On 22nd February 1903, after its inhabitants raised a petition, the settlement was promoted to town. Karlin finally became an official integral part of the Great Prague in 1922.
The whole area is dominated by the reconstructed monument of the Neo-Romanesque Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church built in the 2nd half of the 19th century. The church has been decorated by great artists such as Josef Manes, Frantisek Zenisek, Vaclav Left and sanctified during the imperial visit of emperor Francis Joseph I and his wife Elizabeth. The present school area near the Karlin Square is the result of the intensive efforts of Karlin’s inhabitants to achieve development in education in the 19th century.
